Damn, it seems like every time I start one if these I'm like, "Boy, it's been a while". Lame. (actually i just read some of the last post and i say nothing of the sort. interesting) But here is the deal, what with all the advances in the world of the internet, I've been posting art and other musings on things like Twitter and Tumblr. Eventually, I may have a website where you can see all my news and Art and everything at once, though I might wait till some genius invents a super simple way for me to design my own site. But here is some news for you! I'M HAVING AN ART SHOW AT GALLERY 1988 VENICE, opening AUGUST 26th, attendance is mandatory.

And for those who live in San Francisco I'M GOING TO BE IN A GROUP SHOW AT DOUBLE PUNCH GALLERY opening AUGUST 6th. I'm excited to be in this show with some really awesome artists whom i admire. attendance to this one is also mandatory, even if you live in Texas.

Anywho, I'll probably still update this blogger with the major news but honestly not very frequently. To all you people who have read this blog from the time i started it, seriously, you are so awesome and deserve to be a Queen or King of any land of your choosing.

Hello everybody! I have made a painting for an art show! It is a show that celebrates Cult movies in particular. The movie that I chose to celebrate was Suburbia, the one from 1983. The movie is about Southern California Punkers, I enjoyed this movie as a young person. I wanted to be a cool punker just like those guys. You should watch the movie! It's pretty bad but if you like bad movies like me, you should go for it. Try out the first scene and see how far you make it. The painting depicts a few members of the gang "TR" which stands for Total Rejects, or Totally Rejected. Here we see (left to right) Ethan, Evan, Shiela, Joe Shmo, Jack, Skinner and Razzle and Razzles rat and doberman. The show is at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles and takes place tonight! And will be packed with people of all shapes and sizes. The director of this movie also directed Wayne's World, FYI. OK! I hope you are having a bitchin' summer.

Hello! tonight in LA I will be participating in Another Dimension a tribute, in the form of an art show, to probably the best science fiction TV show of all time, The Twilight Zone. I love this show so much and i was really exited to be a part of it. I chose to depict two awesome episodes, one is "The Howling man", in which this guy who gets lost walking around Europe one rainy night, randomly comes upon a castle where some Moses Looking dudes have imprisoned the devil, the actual devil! Anyway the devil starts whining to the guy and convinces homie to let him out of jail, mistake! the other episode I depicted is called "Caesar and Me", in which this jerky ventriloquist dummy and some little bitchy girl torment the crap out of this friendly Irish immigrant who's just trying to get by, total stinkers. Wow, it's been so long that I've posted something here I almost forgot how to do it. But believe me, I am doing stuff! I've got a big show coming up May 1st. Hello friends. I will be at APE this weekend (Alternative Press Expo) I have made a mini comic/zine to sell. It consists of the first 49 comics i did for the DFAC, I actually don't know if I'm supposed to call it that anymore as that is the official title of Scott's comic. Ill ask him about that. So yeah, you should come. I only have 20 copies of the book, i guess that's how i do things. Here is the awesome cover, front and back, just because. OK see you there xoxo.

Also the site has been revamped to make it more futuristic, there are other perks that i'm learning about as well. So its kind of DCAF celebration week. i cant believe its been 5 years. what a ride! well, pretty mellow ride actually, not so roller coaster-y to be completely honest with you.

Hey everybody. so I'm going to be in this group show at Gallery 1988 tonight in San Francisco! This is a show in which a bunch of artists paint on movie posters. The gallery sent me the Coraline poster. I went for a little "play on words" thing and made a poster for the hit movie In the Coraline of Fire. In which Coraline is always blocking John Malkovich from Clint Eastwood, unintentionally of course, because John Malcovich is into killing presidents and Clint Eastwood is an old school renegade secret service agent who doesn't follow rules and is getting too old for that sh*#. You know. Anyway here are some pictures of it, sorry about the blurry shot. you should check it out in person!

Crazy 4 Cult 3D!

Yes, the 3rd installment of the awesome hit art show about awesome hit movies has arrived! Actually, not hit movies per say, but movies that are considered to be cult classics. This year I once again tackled the theme of time traveling by painting some of the founding members of The Society of In Control Time Travelers. These time travelers did not accidentally fall into a hole, or fall asleep and mysteriously wake up in some other era, They got in their Delorians, or in their phone booths and made it happen. Unless of course they were sent by someone else who could harness time, like Bruce Willis and Terminator. Also unless they could send themselves back in time with the power of their mind to hook up with hot Victorian chicks like Christopher Reeve. Anyway they all met at Doc Brown's house in the late 50's to take this group photo. The Time Bandits made it too of course!

Also! Gallery 1988 is doing a print run of this guy! I have signed 25 prints and G1988 will have them available on their website and at the show. Awesome!

So my buddy, the talented Kate Berry, wife of Ian, hooked me up with this fun illustration job for her work. She is the style editor for Martha Stewart Weddings Magazine. They printed these flowers on some olde timey paper and they are going to do something smart with them for a smart wedding. so if your into flowers and weddings you might be into this. i was into painting them.

So Tim is down at E3 in LA showing the game BRUTAL LEGEND and i had to show you this awesome poster draping the Staples Center. Scott C designed the character (Eddie Riggs), Dave R modeled him, Marke P sent me the 3d elements and i composed it and painted it. It is exiting for me to see something i painted so huge on the side of a building! though it was really an awesome group effort. Long live Double Fine!

So the awesome people who picked up my Greek helmet inspired Batman painting from my show in january (included) have commissioned me to paint 2 other super heroes of my choosing. i chose Spiderman, who is cool, and Night Owl, who is different from Spiderman and Batman in the traditional sense, but who is bird based and i like superheroes who are bird based. OK i hope you guys are good.

All right. Well, actually its tomorrow night, and actually, it's not me but gallery 1988 Los Angeles! It's also a show to celebrate 5 years of gallery 1988 selling art to the people of the world. Katie and Jensen are really awesome and to them i say congratulations!

So I depicted Appolo and Starbuck from the hit 1970's TV show Battlestar Galactica. I liked that show a lot as a child, and once even sent away for some crazy box that was supposed to be the cockpit of one of the space ships. I've enjoyed the new Battlestar Galactica, not as much as some people i know, but I do think its weird that Starbuck is a girl now. Which maybe i am realizing bothers me more than i thought previously, weird. OK, i hear LA is nice right now so hopefully it's still nice tomorrow night and you will feel like going to this art show!

Well, the leaves have changed colors and are starting to fall off the trees here at Nathan Stapley headquarters. Blog priorities have not been in order since summer, but for good reason; I have nothing new to show you. I have a solo show at 1988 gal SF in January where there will be many paintings to see. Also I'm going to be in a show in Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love, in December. Also i will be in the second installment of the Totoro forest project exhibit at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco in December there is a book out too. I can show you a painting of this guy i did for a friend. My Pac-Man painting was printed in this German magazine, GEE for an article on I am 8 bit 08. I'm glad you can't read German. Awesome. More to come sometime soon probably.

So this is a new one, but you should go back in time to last night and go to CRAZY 4 CULT. The second annual show at 1988 gallery in LA celebrating one of my favorite things, movies. I don't have a scanner right now where i am, or even a cord that takes the photos from my digital camera and puts them im my computer. So i am sending you this little study i did for my peices. Fitting with the time traveling nature of this post, I did 3 small paintings of the Time Bandits. Randall and Wally, Strutter and Vermin, and Og and Figit. hope you are good. im going back to New York City now. well tomorrow actually, perhaps i will post the photos i have of said pieces when i get there.

Yar! Totoro Forest Project! Put together by the one Dice Tsutsumi. You may have heard of this because there are like 200 amazing artists involved. So since i already posted my painting down there a bit (see Top Secret), ill just post another photo of Moochie because he is what my painting is based on. Anyway it's going to be an auction at Pixar, also a juried show at the Cartoon Art Museum. Hello there, long time no talk. So I did a print in conglomeration with a guy named Mark and his company Letter Pressed. Together they make really nice looking prints and cards and he asked me to contribute one to his line up of awesome ones. You can pre-order one from him now if you want, Here is where you do that. It depicts Human Monkey, a guy i've made comics about for some time now. Want to see a little page from the first one i made back in the year 2000? ok. you can see the whole comic in this book. And here is what the print will look like, he's hanging out in his old neighborhood. The translation is this: From the Jungle. Moochie Salata (??-2008)

Yes it's true, my favorite dog ever died yesterday. Moochie, a Boston terrier and companion of best bro Jason Salata. In an effed up turn of events, a pit bull from 2 yards over got into his yard and mauled the poor little guy, super sad. Moochie lived a full life, he went through a lot of tough times, humped dogs 3 times his size, and almost lived in England. We didn't know how old he was and we weren't sure how blind he was, but each year he didn't die of old age gave us all hope, and he aged like wine, really nicely. It's just a huge bummer he had to go out like this. I haven't painted any subject as many times as I've painted Mooch, every time someone asks me to paint their dog I have to refuse because all other dogs pale in comparison. So here's a little tribute, there's other Moochie paintings out there, but these are the only ones I have scanned. So here's to Mooch, hopefully he's scratching himself raw up in that big backyard in the sky. RIP Moochie, we'll miss you.

Happy Mondays. So its Monday and i'm going to show you these paintings I did for this show thats going to be in LA tomorrow night, the 8th of january 2008. at 1988 gallery, close to the world famous pinks hot dogs. It's a tribute show for Stan Lee, the guy who created all those awesome super hero's like Spider Man, The Hulk(below) and the X-men, among others. Scott really knows more about the dude than me, but I loved The Hulk TV show when i was a kid, maybe it was something about Lou Ferrigno and how massive and kind hearted he was, like that dude who squished that mouse in that one book. Anyway, here he is all pissed off and about to kick the ass of someone who picked on a nerd or something. Hope you had a good weekend.

hello i have been on vacation for a while but here is some stuff i've done whilst on vacation. i drove to new york to stay with my friends the berry's. it was fun and im driving back to sf today. so heres some paintings and the first page of my new comic in hickee #4 plus the cover i did for hickee #4 volume 10(or something), coming in december. also a new years drawing for THIS SHOW, happening in LA very soon. the gouache paintings on bad cardboard are mt. rushmore and a mountain in the big horn natnl. forest. ok catch you later. stay sweet.

yes, mural/housewarming party tomorrow in San Francisco. I've been painting this mural here and there since last thanksgiving. And it's done, and were gonna have a party to celebrate, also a housewarming for the people who live in the house on which the mural is painted. There will also be live music. My friends helped paint it with me, they are Brett Amory, Kellie Charlton, Francis Hsu and Stephen Brockway.

Horace alley between Fulsom and Shotwell, between 26th and 25th streets (closer to 26th) starts at 3 pm.

I can't go down to see it, but maybe you can go. Like, you might live in LA or somewhere close to LA. Maybe you would like to see these paintings in real life, which usually makes for a better painting watching experience. Anyway, heres a couple of paintings I made for the art show that is all about movies, which is cool, cause i love movies. So anyway I make this comic, its a web comic actually. i try to do one everyday, but it usually varies anywhere from 0-5 times a week. i make it here where i work, double fine productions, we make video games. well, video game really so far, but we're making another awesome one right now even as i write this. yeah so ive been doing this comic since the year 2004 and its fun. so to commemorate i suppose, Tim (boss) wanted me to make buttons just like Scott did, who is my art director and fellow web comic maker. here they are.

So you may have heard, but there will be another Hickee coming out in the near future. To commemorate this occasion (though the book will probably not be out by this time) the Hickee association is going to be showing more paintings at a gallery, this time the gallery is in Portland Oregon. What a town, that Portland. The date of this show is June 7th, thats right, summer. Here's the painting I just sent to Graham, its about baseball.

Searching for Bobby Fisher

Damn, if you forgot how awesome this movie is or say you've never seen it, I suggest you check it out again, or for the first time. I had the pleasure of catching it on direct TV whilst I was flying over Mexico and California yesterday. I was totally blown away by the greatness of this movie. The vibe is one of the best in any movie I've seen. Mellow and awesome but not boring and stupid. Everything i didn't want to happen totally didn't happen and that's always nice when movie watching. And hey, i also forgot that the guy from Boogie Nights who (SPOILERS AHEAD;) kills himself and his wife at a new years eve party because she has sex with tons of dudes, in front of tons of dudes. The same guy was also in the movie Fargo. In Searching for Bobby Fisher his character was still pretty dorky, but not as dorky and pathetic as in those other aforementioned movies. Man, Searching for Bobby Fisher is the best! Also I think there should be something said here, in this post, about heightened emotional levels while seeing movies on planes, i think they might be much higher than if you were to see the same movie at your house or in a theater. Maybe it has to do with the headphones, or going somewhere or coming back from somewhere. I say this because when i was flying over California and Mexico the opposite direction last week, i got pretty choked up watching The Bridge to Tarabethia, maybe the biggest piece of crap in cinematic history, sorry Disney, i sure hope you're not reading this. I also almost cried on a plane one time while watching this shitty movie about some little girl and this dog she found who, together, save some crappy little town from pollution or something. OK, i'll maybe think about posting more paintings of mine at another date, in a week or more if it's all the same to you. But damn speaking of awesome kids who are great, check out some awesome You Tube videos! The first was just sent to me by Joe White and the second was sent to me last year by Tim Schafer. So remember, see Searching for Bobby Fisher.

Montreal - Sacre bleu!

That place is the best. Someone told me on the trip that it's the oldest port city founded by the Euros in North America. I haven't done any research to find out if it's true or whatever, but i'll choose to believe it for now, for the sake of our great weekend there. Anyway the show was awesome and here's the paintings i showed at our new friends gallery called Red Bird studios on Van Horne street in the mile end district (or there abouts). hi, so tomorrow, Tuesday April 17 I will be participating in the 3rd annual "i am 8-bit" show at the prestigious Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles California. There will be many awesome artists participating in this show, if you live in LA you should go and look at it. Jon M. Gibson was/is the curator for these shows and an all around great guy. let's take a second to look back and reflect on my awesome history with this show, shall we?

also this Saturday, April 21st i will be participating in another show at Gallery 1988 but this time in San Francisco, California. It will be the grand opening for this new and awesome gallery. again many great artists will be showing works of their art. This show coincides with APE, or the Alternative Press Exposition. This is a comic book convention where people go to show things that they have made, mostly. If you go, look for the 'Hickee' table and say hello to me and my friends. flyer

Hi there. News flash. So tomorrow night (Thursday march 15th) I'm going to be participating in an art auction to benefit an organization called Save the Waves. they are an awesome organization that rescues different surf spots around the world from being destroyed by whomever might destroy them. this is from their website:

Our Mission
Save the Waves is an environmental coalition dedicated to preserving the world's surf spots. Our goal is to preserve and protect the best surfing locations on the planet and to educate the public about their value. Save the Waves works in partnership with local communities, foreign governments, and other conservation groups to prevent coastal development from entering the surf zone.

Here is a wave I've enjoyed that some people are planning to destroy down in Mexico;

So it's a good cause for everyone and if you live in the city you should check it out there'll be a bunch of artists participating, and ill be contributing the original art from that one t-shirt design i made a few posts down (pre-photoshop). It's at 111 Minna, a gallery here in the city.

So, I'm bored and just wanted to write something that I've thought about from time to time over the past few years. I've noticed that most of my favorite painters out there today are consistently ladies. Sure, there are tons of dudes doing amazing stuff but for me, being into traditional painting (maybe more specifically figure painting) and wanting to see it move forward with originality and awesomeness, these ladies are doing the things right now that hit me the hardest. It seems that this has not always been the case. anyway, who knows but i just thought id share this amazing opinion that i have. A month in review

Hi, happy first day of March 2007. February was pretty cool. As Americans we honored presidents and love. Love day may be international, though I don’t care enough about that stupid holiday to find out. Love day is stupid but George Washington is cool, even though America was’nt really his to fight over in the first place. Abraham Lincoln is cool too, just ask everyone. It almost snowed in San Francisco which is crazy. I don’t use my heater in my apartment because I spilled wax in it so it’s been really cold, even the socks in my drawers are cold. It’s probably not as cold as other places, but cold for me. I read a book too. Anyway here’s a thing I did in February. It’s a t-shirt design for this surf shop, you can buy one someday soon at said surfshop. I'll also show you a drawing of a jacket and a photo of Jesus coming on Oscar day. I have allot to do this month because I will be in some art shows around the nation, but mostly in California and Canada, in April. Ill tell you about those later. So here’s to March! Well, here's a shot of this one time my friend Clark lit my friend Gregs foot on fire (Greg was passed out from beer and being tired, he can sleep through a lot). My friend Jeff's wife Samantha, who's house we were at, got super pissed. I still feel pretty bad about it, even though all i did was take the picture which i must say is pretty genius. Considering the whole delay thing that most digital cameras are cursed with, I think i really captured that magical moment when burning sensation receptors are traveling from Gregs foot to his brain. The human body is truly a miracle.

OPEN STUDIOS!
Week 3, this weekend. Saturday and Sunday October 21st and 22nd

So this weekend im doing Open Studios with my friend and great painter Brett Amory. We're cleaning out his studio and putting up a bunch of paintings, new ond old. I have about 26 or so new small ones. Open studios is this awesome thing in San Francisco that happens every weekend in October, It's pretty self explanitory so I won't explain it.

We'll be there starting around noon and there will be beer, and most likely hot dogs.

Hi. So, news; I'm going to have a painting in an art show in Los Angeles this weekend. The show is at gallery 1988 and is based around that character in Alice in Wonderland named The Cheshire Cat. He was this tripped out purple Cat that could disappear, float around, things like that. He had this smooth voice and sang trippy songs and laughed for no reason. Awesome artists like Amanda Visell are in this show too. Darn, she’s good. Here is a flyer; she painted the painting on it.
Here’s my painting. I painted him right after he pulled his head off his neck. I mounted the painting on a piece of wood. It’s oil paint on panel and its 3x5 inches.
